Fortrose Cathedral

The ruins of Fortrose Cathedral sit right at the edge of the Black Isle, just a short walk from the village square. What remains are the chancel and sacristy - enough to give you a proper sense of the scale of this 13th-century building, though calling it intact would be generous. The stonework is gorgeous though, especially the carved details on the windows if you get close enough.

You're looking at maybe 20 minutes here if you're thorough, 10 if you're just passing through. There's no charge and no visitor centre, which means it's refreshingly low-key. You can walk right up to the stones, take your time, and there's usually space to sit on the grass if the weather cooperates. History types will appreciate the graveyards dotted around - several old stones are worth a read if you've got the time.

The real draw is how it slots into a wider Black Isle wander. Fortrose Bay Campsite sits half a mile away, making this a natural stop before or after a beach walk. The village itself is peaceful rather than exciting, but that's partly the point. If you're staying in the area and fancy something that doesn't require advance booking or a long drive, this does the job without fuss. The ruined cathedral has real atmosphere on a quiet morning, particularly if clouds roll in off the Firth. Worth the detour if you're in the Highlands and like your attractions straightforward and historical.
