The fairways at Formby Hall roll through proper Lancashire countryside just outside Southport, and even if you're not swinging a club yourself, there's something satisfying about watching golfers navigate the manicured greens and woodland stretches. It's a full resort setup - golf course, hotel, dining - which means you're looking at a proper day out rather than a quick nine holes and off.

Golfers will obviously get the most from this, particularly those after a decent provincial course without driving five hours south. The layout takes advantage of the natural terrain, and the clubhouse facilities are solid. Non-players won't find much to do, to be honest - this isn't the sort of place where partners pop in for a coffee while someone plays. Book ahead if you're planning to play; it's a members' club but visitors are welcome on arrangement.

If you're basing yourself at Southport Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, Formby Hall makes sense as a half-day activity for the golfer in your group. The resort runs its own accommodation too if you fancy staying closer to the course itself. Allow three to four hours for a round, plus time for food and drink.
