Forest Recreation Ground

You'll find this sprawling nature reserve just a stone's throw from Nottingham's city edge, a proper escape without the drive. The Forest Recreation Ground is essentially what it says on the tin - a working green space where locals come to run, walk dogs, and lose themselves in woodland that feels genuinely removed from urban life despite being so close to town.

The reserve itself is fairly straightforward. There are established paths threading through mixed woodland and open grassland, which makes it accessible for families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle meander rather than a strenuous hike. You can easily spend two to three hours here without feeling rushed, though an hour will do if you're just after a quick bit of fresh air. Wildlife watchers might spot blackbirds and pheasants, and the seasonal changes to the undergrowth keep it interesting if you return regularly.

Timing-wise, spring and early summer are when it's at its best - the canopy fills out and you get decent birdsong. Winter is quieter and muddier. Being free to access and without strict opening hours (a blessing for spontaneous visits), it works brilliantly as a half-day trip paired with staying at one of the nearby campsites. Holme Pierrepont and the Bell Tent Village are both within three miles, so you could easily base yourself there and use this as a morning adventure before heading into Nottingham proper. It's not going to blow your mind, but for a straightforward woodland walk with no faffing about, it delivers.
