Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail

Walk through the Forest of Dean and you'll stumble across wooden sculptures emerging from the trees like something out of a fever dream. The Sculpture Trail threads through the forest floor, and these aren't your average park installations - they're genuinely odd, sometimes beautiful, occasionally unsettling figures that make you stop and actually look at the woods around you.

It's a proper walk, mind you. Not a gentle stroll to the gift shop. You're navigating forest paths, so decent boots are essential, and the trail takes a good couple of hours if you want to see the main pieces without rushing. The sculptures appear at intervals, which keeps things interesting - there's always another reason to push deeper into the trees. Kids aged eight and up tend to enjoy the hunt aspect of it, though younger ones might find the walk itself taxing.

Nearest town is Lydney, and if you're camping in the area - Whitemead Forest Park is closest at 2.8 miles, or Bracelands and Greenacres are both under 3.5 miles away - this makes a cracking alternative to another lap of the main forest drives. The whole thing is free, which is just as well given how little information actually exists about opening times online. Go when the weather's decent and the paths aren't churned up. Autumn's excellent if you can swing it - fewer people, the light's better, and the forest colours make the sculptures pop. Worth the muddy knees.
