Forbridge Hill

The walk up Forbridge Hill rewards you with proper Cairngorms views without requiring the serious fitness needed for the higher peaks. Starting from Strathdon, it's a straightforward route that takes maybe two hours up and back, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

What you get is open moorland terrain, the kind of walking that feels genuinely Scottish - heather underfoot, wide skies, and visibility that stretches for miles on a decent day. The summit itself isn't dramatic, but that's partly the appeal. There's something honest about a hill that doesn't oversell itself. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the exposed moorland a bit dull after the first half-hour.

Historiographically, this area around Strathdon has been walking country for centuries, though the hill itself won't give you any ruins or dramatic geological features to get excited about. It's working landscape - working in the sense that people have lived and moved through it for ages, not that it's a tourist attraction with facilities.

Time it for late spring through early autumn if you can. Winter and early spring bring bad visibility and potentially treacherous underfoot conditions. The nearest decent base is Cairngorms Glamping & Campsite, just 2.3 miles away, which makes this a sensible half-day outing between longer explorations of the Cairngorms proper. Free to walk, obviously - just park responsibly near Strathdon and go.
