Fonthill Lake

The lake itself is the real draw here - a proper body of water ringed by woodland that feels genuinely peaceful, even when you're only a few miles from Salisbury. Created back in the 18th century as part of an estate, it's now a nature reserve that pulls in walkers and bird-watchers year-round.

What you get is straightforward: a lake circuit that takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on pace, with decent paths around the perimeter. The water reflects the sky well on calm days, and the birdlife is genuinely decent - you'll spot wildfowl, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer visitors that make this spot worth a naturalist's notebook. Woodland comes right down to the water's edge in places, which breaks up what could otherwise feel a bit exposed.

It's not a scrambling destination or anything dramatic. This is the sort of place walkers pass through while exploring the wider Wiltshire countryside, or where families with young kids can burn an hour without fuss. The ground can get boggy in winter, so good boots are sense.
