Folly Hill

The walk up Folly Hill from Mells takes about twenty minutes if you're not dawdling, but most people do. The path winds through proper countryside - fields, hedgerows, the occasional farm gate - before opening onto a modest peak with views across the Somerset levels that stretch properly far on a clear day. At the top there's not much to speak of, just grass and sky, which is rather the point. You're looking south towards Glastonbury Tor on good visibility, west towards the Quantocks. It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble, so families with school-age children manage it without complaint. Give yourself forty minutes up and back, longer if you stop for the view halfway. The real appeal here is the lack of fuss. No car park to queue for, no café trying to sell you a seven-pound coffee. Free, accessible, and far less trampled than the obvious Somerset peaks. Best visited in autumn or early spring when you've got decent light but fewer midges. Mells itself is a proper village - village shop, decent pub - so you can fill the afternoon exploring the high street before or after. If you're staying at Glamping on the Hill, it's barely a twenty-minute drive, making this an ideal warm-up walk before tackling anything more ambitious. Worth the detour? Only if you appreciate quiet over spectacular.
