Foel-Fras

The walk up Foel-Fras from Blaenau Ffestiniog is genuinely rewarding if you don't mind a bit of graft. It's a proper mountain - nothing massive, but steep enough that you'll feel like you've earned the summit. The view across the Snowdonia peaks is the thing that gets you; on a clear day the sight lines go for miles, and you can pick out the slate quarries that built this whole area falling away below.

Walkers will absolutely get the most out of this. It's not a casual stroll - allow a good two to three hours for the round trip, and you'll need proper boots because the paths can be boggy even when the rest of North Wales looks bone dry. Families with younger kids might find it a stretch, though stubborn teenagers with decent fitness will manage it. History buffs will appreciate that you're literally walking through the landscape that shaped the local economy for 200 years.

Free, obviously. No fees, no visitor centre nonsense. Just you, the mountain, and whatever weather the Welsh hills decide to throw at you.

Llyn Gwynant Campsite, a bit further out at 5.5 miles, gives you access to quieter walking routes if you want to vary your days. Foel-Fras works best in late spring through early autumn. Winter is doable but the paths get treacherous fast.
