Foel Cwmcerwyn

The walk up Foel Cwmcerwyn rewards you with one of Pembrokeshire's finest viewpoints - and you won't need to be a seasoned mountaineer to get there. It's a proper hill walk rather than a scramble, taking roughly an hour from the car park, with the path well-trodden and fairly straightforward even when it gets steep towards the summit.

What makes it worthwhile is the sweep of perspective you gain at the top. On a clear day you're looking across the Preseli Mountains and out towards the coast. The landscape rolls away in all directions - less dramatic than some peaks you might tackle, but genuinely striking for all that. Walkers will get the most from this one, and families with older kids who don't mind a proper climb will find it manageable. It's not a casual stroll, though. Bring decent boots and expect mud.

The whole outing takes a couple of hours including the summit sit-down. Free to visit - there's no gate or barrier. Go early if the weather looks uncertain; mist rolls in quickly in these hills and you lose the views entirely. Winter can be wet underfoot, so autumn or late spring works better.

It slots nicely into a wider Pembrokeshire walking holiday. You're close enough to Newport to base yourself at either Llwyngwair Manor or Llandissilio Holiday Parks, both excellent spots for outdoor types, and still have time to explore the coastal paths or visit the Preseli stone circle on the same day. Worth the drive from the parks.
