The woodland at Floodgate Plantation near Loughborough is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a proper bit of forest that actually feels like you've left town behind. It's not vast, but it does what it does well: mature trees, decent paths, and enough space to feel properly green without needing to drive an hour into the countryside.

Walkers will get the most from this. The trails are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though if you've got toddlers expecting a playground or visitor centre, you'll be disappointed. This is just woodland - no cafes, no facilities, just the forest. Plan on anything from thirty minutes to two hours depending on how much wandering you want to do. The place is free and accessible year-round, though it's genuinely lovely in spring when the woodland floor comes alive, and properly atmospheric in autumn when everything turns bronze.

You won't need to venture far, and it breaks up the holiday rhythm nicely between relaxing at the site and proper outdoor time.
