Flint Hill

The walk up Flint Hill from Hawes takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland, and on a clear day you get views across Wensleydale that justify every step of the climb. It's not dramatic or especially high compared to what you find further west in the Lake District, but that's partly why it works so well as a half-day outing from any of the local campsites.

You're looking at a straightforward fell walk rather than a scramble - well-trodden path, nothing technical, and the kind of thing families with reasonable fitness manage without too much fuss. The summit cairn sits at around 2,000 feet, giving you a proper sense of achievement without consuming your entire afternoon. Count on two hours there and back, maybe add thirty minutes if you're taking photographs or dawdling in the heather.

Hawes itself, the nearest town, sits right at the base, so you can pop up the hill as a morning jaunt and still have the afternoon for the Wensleydale Railway or poking around the town's cheese factory and craft shops. If you're camping at Stablefell Holidays or Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club - both excellent bases - Flint Hill makes a natural addition to your itinerary without eating up precious holiday time on long drives.

Spring and early summer are best, when the moorland flowers are out and the light stays decent into the evening. Winter can be muddy and cheerless. Come for the walk itself rather than expecting anything dramatic at the top - it's the Wensleydale views that make it worthwhile.
