About Flagpole Dune (37m originally)

Standing on what was once Devon's highest sand dune at 37 metres, you get proper views across Croyde Bay and the rugged North Devon coast. The dune has shrunk considerably over the decades - wind and weather have worn it down from its original towering height, but it's still worth the scramble up for the panorama.

Families with older children will enjoy the walk, though little ones might find the sandy slopes a bit much. The climb takes about ten minutes if you're reasonably fit, and once up there you can see right across to Lundy Island on a clear day. Surfers heading to Croyde often stop here to check the waves.

There's no formal car park or facilities - you'll need to find roadside parking near Croyde village and follow the coastal path. Best visited in decent weather when visibility is good, and avoid it after heavy rain when the paths get muddy. The whole experience takes about an hour including the walk there and back.

This works well as a morning detour if you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Croyde Bay or Woolacombe. Ruda Holiday Park and Ocean Pitch Campsite are both under three miles away, making it an easy day trip addition to your seaside break.
