Finningley Park

The airfield at Finningley has a peculiar sort of charm - it's one of those places that matters more for what happened there than what you see today. Used as an RAF station during World War Two and later by Avro, this is where serious British aviation history unfolded. You can still spot the runways and original buildings dotted about, though there's not much in the way of interpretation boards or visitor facilities to guide you through.

It works best if you've got a genuine interest in military aviation or Cold War history. Walking the perimeter is straightforward enough, and the scale of the original airfield gives you a sense of its importance. Plan on an hour if you're just passing through, longer if you want to photograph the remaining structures properly. The light's usually best in late afternoon.

From a caravan base perspective, this sits handily between Doncaster and the quieter eastern edge of Nottinghamshire. Bawtry Caravan Park is under three miles away, making it a quick excursion if you're parked up there. Misterton Holiday Park, six miles south, also works if you're after something more secluded. Neither spot has much else immediately adjacent, so you'd want to combine Finningley with a proper day out in Doncaster itself - the railway museum and town centre are worth the drive. The airfield alone won't fill your afternoon, but history buffs and aircraft enthusiasts will find it quietly rewarding.
