Finglandrigg Wood National Nature Reserve

You're walking through proper ancient woodland here, the kind of place where the trees have been doing their thing for centuries. Finglandrigg Wood sits just outside Wigton in Cumbria, and it's a national nature reserve that actually deserves the label - this isn't some token patch of greenery.

It's primarily for serious nature enthusiasts and walkers. Kids will find it interesting for maybe an hour unless you're the type of family that stops to identify every bird call and beetle. The reserve isn't set up with visitor facilities, so bring water and don't expect a café at the end.

Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit. Access appears to be free, though always check locally as these things shift.
