Finchampstead Ridges

The ridges here run for about three miles through mixed woodland and heathland, and they're genuinely worth the drive out from Wokingham. The sandy soil means the ground stays reasonably dry even after rain, which is why locals keep coming back. There's a proper network of paths criss-crossing the reserve - some wide enough for families with buggies, others narrow enough to feel like you've actually escaped somewhere.

The heath has heather and gorse, and on a clear day you can see far enough to remember why people bothered to fight over English countryside.

Walkers will spend a solid two hours here without rushing. Families with younger kids might manage an hour and a half before complaints start. Birdwatchers and wildlife photographers come specifically for this place - it attracts woodpeckers, nuthatches, and the occasional deer. The terrain is gentle rather than challenging, which suits most fitness levels.

If you're staying at Wellington Country Park nearby, this makes an easy morning excursion. Entry is free, parking is straightforward, and there are no facilities to speak of, so bring water. Don't expect drama or monuments. Just proper English woodland where the most interesting thing happening is usually whatever you spot moving between the trees.
