Filnore Community Woodland

You'll find yourself wandering through proper ancient woodland once you turn off the lanes near Wotton-under-Edge. Filnore Community Woodland is exactly what it says - a patch of old trees, scrubland, and paths that locals have clearly worked to keep accessible. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no faffing about. Just woodland.

Walkers get the most from this place. The paths meander through mixed woodland where you might spot woodland birds and the usual suspects of an English forest floor - ferns, moss, maybe a deer if you're lucky early on. There's a real sense that this has been looked after by people who actually care about it, not by a heritage organisation ticking boxes. Bring the kids and they'll enjoy scrambling about for thirty minutes to an hour, though it won't hold their attention all day.

It's free to wander in whenever you fancy, and there's no formal opening hours nonsense that I'm aware of. The nearest proper town is Wotton-under-Edge, which gives you somewhere to grab a coffee and a sandwich before or after. If you're based at one of the local spots - Wixoldbury Farm Glamping is within striking distance - it's a decent morning walk to add onto your trip. Won't transform your holiday, but a solid choice if you're already in the area and fancy some easy woodland time without the usual tourist machinery.
