Filmore Hill

The walk up Filmore Hill is a proper leg-burner, but the effort pays off once you reach the summit near Petersfield. It's not exactly Alpine drama - Hampshire doesn't do drama - but the views across the South Downs are genuinely lovely on a clear day, and the ridge walk itself feels properly remote given how close you are to civilization.

What you're actually doing is a straightforward hill walk with decent elevation gain for the area. The summit itself is unremarkable - no stone cairn or trig point, just moorland and the sense of having earned your vantage point. Walkers will get the most from this one; it's the kind of local route that rewards those who know the Downs well rather than a destination that'll blow your mind.

Allow a couple of hours for a there-and-back trip, depending on your pace and how long you spend admiring the view. Spring and early autumn are best - summer can be muggy and overrun with day-trippers from Petersfield, while winter turns the path into a proper mud bath.

If you're camping at Cedar Valley or Woodlands Camping nearby, Filmore Hill makes a solid morning or afternoon outing without eating into travel time. It works well paired with other Downs walks rather than as a solo mission. Bring decent boots; the ground gets boggy, and the slopes are steep enough that slipping about isn't fun.
