Filmer Wood

Walk into Filmer Wood and you're immediately swallowed by tall pines and the sort of quiet that makes your ears ring. It's a proper forest - the kind where you lose sense of the surrounding Kent countryside within minutes. The woodland floor is thick with needles, paths thread through in a few directions, and if you go early enough you might actually be alone.

This is a straightforward woodland walk rather than a destination attraction. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no reason to pack a picnic. What you get is about an hour or two of decent walking through mature conifer plantation - decent if you like trees and solitude, perhaps less rewarding if you're expecting a dramatic viewpoint or something Instagram-worthy at the end.

Families with young children might find it a bit samey after forty minutes. Walkers and forest photographers will have a better time, especially on grey days when the light filters through the canopy. There's something about Kentish woodland that feels like proper countryside despite being only a short drive from Faversham.

It works well as a half-day activity slotted around other stops. If you're staying at Chegworth Mill Glamping just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch that won't eat into your afternoon. Just go in waterproofs - these pines keep the undergrowth damp year-round.
