Field System

Field System is a contemporary art gallery tucked into Devon's countryside near South Brent, and it's the sort of place that catches you off guard in the best possible way. You'll find visual art and installations that actually make you think rather than just walk past, which is refreshing when you're on a caravan holiday and the weather's turned drizzly.

The gallery works brilliantly if you're the type who needs a bit of culture between moorland walks and cream teas. It's not enormous - you can work through it in an hour or so - but the calibre of what's on show punches well above what you'd expect from a small rural space. Artists tend to use the space thoughtfully, so there's usually something worth stopping for rather than filler.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Ashbourne Woods or Dornafield Dartmoor are both excellent - Field System makes a sensible afternoon diversion. It's the kind of stop that breaks up a Dartmoor day nicely without requiring serious planning. Families with older kids who aren't moor-walk enthusiasts will find it engaging enough, though younger children might get restless.

You'll want to check ahead for current opening hours and what's on, as gallery programming changes and hours can be unpredictable outside peak season. Worth the detour if you're in the area and contemporary art appeals, but don't make it the reason you visit South Brent.
