Field Head Wood

Walk into Field Head Wood near Lancaster and you're immediately surrounded by proper woodland - the kind with dappled light filtering through a decent canopy and the ground soft underfoot. It's a straightforward forest experience rather than anything artificially managed, which means you get actual peace and quiet instead of a manicured nature experience.

The woodland itself is solid for a decent ramble. Paths wind through, the air smells right, and if you're after an hour or two away from the caravan or glamping lodge, it delivers without fuss. Dog walkers clearly love it here - you'll spot plenty of well-trodden routes where people take the same loops regularly. Families with younger kids will get tired of it after about ninety minutes unless you're the type who gets excited about spotting wildlife, but teenagers and serious walkers will find it genuinely worthwhile.

There's nothing twee about the place. No visitor centre, no café, no ticket booth as far as anyone can tell. Free access, which is refreshing. The best approach is to come first thing if you want solitude - late afternoon brings the post-work crowd out, which rather defeats the purpose of visiting woodland. Winter's actually decent here; wet underfoot but quieter and clearer visibility through the trees.

If you're staying at Crook O'Lune Holiday Park just down the road, this is an easy escape between family activities elsewhere. Less predictable than Hidden Hills Luxury Glamping's more curated surroundings, but that's precisely the appeal.
