Ffynon Helig

The water at Ffynon Helig sits dark and still, ringed by low hills that rise gradually from the Carmarthenshire countryside. It's a proper freshwater lake - nothing grand or theatrical, just quietly there, which is rather the appeal. You can walk the perimeter without much fuss, and the paths around it give decent views back across the water to the surrounding slopes.

This is the kind of place walkers pass through rather than linger at, though there's something meditative about it if you've got an hour to spare. It works well as a loop walk if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks like Pembrey Country Park or Shoreline, both within easy driving distance of Burry Port. The lake itself sits inland from the coast, so it slots nicely into a broader South Wales itinerary - you could easily combine it with a morning at Pembrey beach or the country park's other amenities.

Families won't find organised attractions here, and the views won't stop you in your tracks. But if you're into quiet water walks or bird spotting, it's worth the detour. Wildlife types might spot waterfowl depending on the season. The ground can get boggy in places, so proper walking boots are sensible rather than optional.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no car park signage you'd write home about. Bring what you need with you. Best done as part of a longer day out rather than a destination in itself. It's honest countryside, nothing more.
