Ffynnon-ddu Wood

The woodland path into Ffynnon-ddu feels properly remote, even though Newport is only a few miles away. This is old-growth forest in the proper sense - tall oaks and beeches that have been left to their own devices, with a stream running through the middle that you can actually hear before you see it.

What makes it worth the detour is the genuine peace of the place. No facilities, no visitor centre, no gift shop - just trees and the occasional woodland smell that reminds you why forests matter. The paths are well-trodden enough to follow, though muddy after rain, and the whole walk takes about 90 minutes if you're in no hurry. It's brilliant for families who want to let kids run about without supervision anxiety, or for anyone after a proper woodland walk that isn't on the A-road tourist circuit.

Historically it's interesting too - the name itself (Ffynnon-ddu means "black spring" in Welsh) hints at something older than the trees themselves. Whether that's Iron Age or just local legend, the atmosphere suggests depth.

If you're staying at Llwyngwair Manor, this is genuinely closer than most of the packaged attractions in Pembrokeshire. Go midweek if you can, and avoid the school holidays unless you're keen on company. The best light is late afternoon when it slants through the canopy - that's when it stops being just a walk and becomes something you remember.
