Ffridd Fach

The walk up Ffridd Fach doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. You'll be rewarded with proper panoramic views across the Powys valleys without the crowds that descend on bigger peaks nearby. It's a modest hill by Welsh standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping for breath - but the vantage point over the Welshpool area and beyond justifies the detour.

This one suits walkers after a decent afternoon route without committing to a full day in the hills. The terrain is manageable underfoot, and you're looking at a solid two to three hours for most people. Bring a map and decent boots; the weather can turn quickly up here, even when it looks calm from below.

For families, it depends. Young kids will find it tiring, and there's nothing at the summit to keep them entertained for long - no café, no stone tower to scramble on. But teenagers or keener walkers in the family will appreciate it as a proper walk that doesn't feel like a slog. The views alone are worth the effort.

Based from Cae Nant Glamping or Camp Plas, both just five miles south, Ffridd Fach makes a cracking morning or early afternoon outing before heading back to base. Pair it with exploring Welshpool's market square and you've got a solid day. Spring through autumn is best - the higher you go, the more exposed it gets in winter.
