Fernworthy Stone Circle

The stones stand in a near-perfect circle on Dartmoor, weathered and silent, surrounded by Bronze Age quiet. Fernworthy Stone Circle sits about five miles from Exeter if you're doing the maths, though it feels properly remote once you're out on the moorland itself.

This is a proper walk to reach it - not brutal, but you won't stumble across it by accident. The circle comprises around twenty-seven stones, some tall enough to catch your eye, others just stubby granite reminders that time moves differently here. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretive panels telling you exactly what to think. Just the stones, the moor, and whatever story you make of them.

It works brilliantly for walkers who want something more than a viewpoint. The approach through the heathland gives you time to settle into the landscape, and the circle itself rewards the effort with a genuine sense of Bronze Age presence - not manufactured, just there. Families with young kids might find the walk a bit much unless they're keen rambler types; adults and teenagers interested in archaeology or ancient monuments will get plenty from it.

Go early morning if you can. The light hits differently, and you'll likely have the place to yourself. The nearby Dartmoor National Park at 4.8 miles offers gentler walks if you want to split your days, or base yourself at Woodland Springs Touring Park for easy access to both. Free to visit, obviously - no one's charging admission for standing stones on a moor. Allow a couple of hours including the walk.
