Ferndown Local Nature Reserve

The footpaths here wind through a genuinely wild corner of Staffordshire that most people driving past Stafford completely miss. Ferndown Local Nature Reserve is modest in size but proper rewarding if you take time to walk it properly - we're talking wetland habitat, grassland, and patches of woodland that actually feel remote despite being minutes from town.

The reserve is managed for wildlife rather than visitors, which means you get the real thing: dragonflies skimming the water in summer, nesting birds across the seasons, wildflowers that haven't been deadheaded into submission. Bring binoculars if you're even slightly interested in birds - the diversity here surprised us. The paths are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might struggle with the muddy bits if it's been wet.

You'll want to allow a good hour to actually see anything rather than just march through. Early morning visits are vastly better than afternoons when the light's harsh and wildlife retreats. Entry's free, which is brilliant.

If you're camping at Fledgling Farm nearby, this makes a proper morning outing before heading back for breakfast. It's not going to blow your mind if you're expecting something grand, but it's exactly what a local nature reserve should be - honest, unpretentious, and genuinely interesting if you slow down enough to notice. Worth the detour if you've got time.
