Fenton's Field

The field itself sits just outside Mells, a proper little stone village that feels genuinely frozen in time. Fenton's Field is exactly what it sounds like - a working agricultural space that's been part of the local landscape for generations. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no theatre of heritage about it. You walk in and you see fields, hedgerows, the rhythms of actual farming.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to people who actually care about how food gets grown, or walkers passing through the Mendips who want to understand the working countryside rather than just admire it from a distance. Families with young kids might manage half an hour before restlessness sets in, unless they're the sort that genuinely engage with farm life. Photographers will find character in the dry stone walls and seasonal changes.

Access is essentially free - you're walking through open countryside - though respect for working land means you keep to paths and gates. No formal opening hours because it's not really a "destination" in the conventional sense. Allow an hour if you're making it part of a wider walk through the area.

It works well as a break between structured attractions during a park holiday. Glamping on the Hill, just up the road, gives you a proper base for exploring both Fenton's Field and the wider Mendip landscape. This is countryside tourism without the polish, which is either exactly what you want or a reason to head somewhere else.
