Fen Alder Carr

The boardwalk here cuts through something genuinely special - a working alder carr that feels properly wild despite being a stone's throw from Ipswich. You're walking through wet woodland where the ground would swallow your boots whole if you strayed off the path, which is precisely why the raised walkway exists. Dragonflies hover over the water channels, bitterns call from the reeds if you time it right (spring and summer are best), and in winter the place has a stark, lonely beauty that most visitors miss.

This is one for the naturalists and photographers rather than families after an amusement-park experience. The reserve demands a bit of patience - you won't see everything in ten minutes. Allow an hour at least if you're serious about spotting things, longer if you bring binoculars. The whole point is watching how the carr manages itself: the way alders dominate, how sedges and mosses thrive in the waterlogged soil. It's educational without being heavy-handed about it.

You'll want to ring ahead to check access and conditions - boardwalks can be slippery in wet weather, and water levels vary. Coming from Stonham Barns or Goldings just up the road, it's a decent half-morning detour before heading elsewhere. Pair it with a walk around Redgrave and Lopham Fen if you're making a day of nature reserves. Not flashy, not Instagram-friendly, but proper rewarding if you know what to look for.
