Fellcroft Loch

The water sits dark and still, ringed by low hills that slope down gentle-like from the moorland above. Fellcroft Loch is a proper quiet spot in the Scottish Lowlands, just inland from Kirkcudbright, and it's the sort of place you could spend an hour doing absolutely nothing and feel like you've earned it.

There's no visitor centre or café - it's just the loch itself. You can walk the shoreline if the ground's not too boggy, or simply find a rock and watch the light change across the water. Birdwatchers come here regularly. So do people who've exhausted themselves on the busier Galloway Forest trails and want something gentler. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming if they're after splash and activity, but for anyone who likes their landscapes sparse and honest, it works.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no formal car park to speak of - you'll likely need to pull off the back road and walk in. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're just having a look around; longer if you're plotting to circumnavigate the whole thing.

If you're based at Silver Craigs Campsite or Kippford View Holiday Park - both within 5 miles - this makes a decent half-day escape from the seaside holiday park routine. It's quieter than Loch Ken to the north and requires less planning. Not dramatic, but genuinely restorative on a clear afternoon.
