Fell Christy

The ruins of Fell Christy sit quietly off the beaten track near Ingatestone, a modest reminder of Essex's medieval past that most visitors to the area completely miss. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - the fragmentary remains of what was once a significant manor house, now just flint and brick foundations emerging from overgrown grass.

What you're looking at are the ghostly outlines of a building that's been dead for centuries. The site itself doesn't demand hours of your time - thirty minutes is plenty for a proper poke around, assuming you can actually locate it without assistance. That's partly the appeal though. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards spelling everything out. You work out what you're seeing yourself, which makes it feel more like archaeology than tourism.

This is genuinely one for history obsessives rather than casual day-trippers. Walkers heading through the Essex countryside might find it a worthwhile detour, but families with younger children will likely find it underwhelming - there's nothing to do here but look and wonder. The surrounding landscape is pleasant enough if you're comfortable with rural Essex flatness, all fields and distant church spires.

If you're camping at The Courts Campsite or Stuarts Wood - both solid choices within a few miles - you could easily work this into a morning walk. Just don't expect revelations or crowd-free Instagram moments. Fell Christy is what it is: quiet, obscure, and genuinely hard to find. Sometimes that's exactly what makes somewhere worth the effort.
