Fechil Wood

The walk through Fechil Wood near Ellon is one of those Scottish forest experiences that doesn't shout about itself. Ancient pines tower overhead, their trunks rough and honest, and the forest floor is soft underfoot - proper spongy with decades of needles. It's quiet here. Really quiet.

This is woodland walking at its best without the crowds you'd get elsewhere in Aberdeenshire. The trails wind through mixed native forest, and on a clear day you get decent views across the Ythan Valley. Bring proper boots though - it gets boggy in places, especially after rain, and the undergrowth can be thick. Allow a good two hours if you want to explore properly, longer if you're taking photos.

Families with older kids will find it engaging, though younger ones might get restless after the first mile. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. Historians won't find much in terms of ruined castles or standing stones - this is about the landscape itself, not interpretation boards and visitor centres.

It works brilliantly as part of a wider Aberdeenshire countryside trip. The Ythan Valley Campsite is close by, making it a natural stopping point for anyone basing themselves in the area. Free to access, open year-round, and best visited in late spring or early autumn when the midges aren't quite so aggressive. Winter's fine too if you don't mind muddy boots.
