About Faversham Stone Chapel

Standing alone in a Kent field, this 12th-century chapel is properly atmospheric. What remains is mostly stonework - enough to read the outline of a medieval building, but not so much that your imagination has to do no work. You're looking at the foundations and lower walls of what was once a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Elverton, abandoned centuries ago and left to the elements.

It's free to visit and requires no booking through English Heritage. Allow 20 minutes if you're passing through, longer if you've got a real interest in medieval religion and rural settlement patterns. The site sits just outside Faversham, so it works well as a brief detour when you're exploring the town itself - the gunpowder history and abbey are the bigger draws, but this chapel has a different kind of quiet.

Family groups with young children might find it a bit underwhelming - there's not much to do except look and read the interpretation board. Walkers and history types will get more from it. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough, and if you're based at Painters Farm Camping Site or Seasalter Holiday Park nearby, it's an easy addition to your day. Best visited in decent light so you can actually see the stonework clearly. Winter's atmospheric but muddy - summer's more forgiving underfoot.

Not a reason to plan your whole Kent trip around, but worth 20 minutes if you're in the area and curious about what medieval rural chapels looked like before they vanished from the landscape.
