Fatherley Hill

The walk up Fatherley Hill rewards you with proper views across Weardale - one of those Pennine peaks that doesn't announce itself loudly but delivers when you get there. It's a genuine hill walk rather than a stroll, with enough elevation to feel like you've earned the summit, but nothing so steep that it'll leave you gasping for the whole way.

This is walkers' territory, full stop. If you're after a quick tourist sniff you'll be disappointed, but if you like moorland views and actual effort, you'll find it worthwhile. The surrounding landscape is genuine upland - heather, grass, and those wide-open vistas that make the North East's hills special. On a clear day the perspective across the valley is excellent.

You're looking at a decent hike rather than an afternoon stroll, so bring proper boots and check the weather beforehand. The nearest town is Weardale itself, a small community right in the valley, which keeps this area properly quiet. Several holiday parks sit within a couple of miles - Heather View and Kingfisher are the closest options if you're basing yourself for a few days. Bradley Burn is a bit further out but still manageable for a morning walk.

The appeal here is straightforward: solitude and decent moorland walking without the tourist crowds you'd get further south. Go if you want authentic Pennine landscape and don't mind a real walk to get it.
