Fane's Gorse

Fane's Gorse is a proper woodland walk just outside Lincoln, the kind of place where you actually feel like you've escaped the city even though you're barely ten minutes' drive away. The forest sits on sandy soil, which means the trees - mostly pine and birch - have that slightly windswept character you get on the Continent. It's quiet, which matters.

You're looking at a decent network of paths threading through thick woodland, easy enough underfoot and mostly flat. The canopy closes in nicely, so it's brilliant on hot days. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, just forest. Some walkers love that stripped-back approach; others find it a bit too bare-bones. I'd say allow an hour to two hours depending on how many turns you take.

It works well for families with kids old enough to enjoy a proper walk - under-fives will get bored quickly without a destination or playground. History types won't find much here; this is about the walk itself, the air, the sound of your feet on the path. Locals use it regularly for dog walks and morning jogs, which tells you something about its reliability.

If you're staying at Spire View Meadow just four miles away, Fane's Gorse makes a solid morning outing before heading into Lincoln proper. It's free and unregimented, which is either exactly what you want or precisely what you'll find frustrating. No crowds, mind you - that's the real draw.
