Fan Dringarth

A steep trudge up barren moorland rewards you with proper views across the Brecon Beacons and beyond. Fan Dringarth isn't a dramatic peak - it won't take your breath away like Pen y Ghent might - but there's something satisfying about reaching 662 metres with relatively little faffing about. The walk itself is straightforward: aim for Neath from the south and you'll find the approach paths easily enough. Allow a couple of hours there and back if you're reasonably fit, though the terrain underfoot can be boggy after rain.

Best suited to walkers rather than casual strollers. Kids will either love the moorland expanse or get bored halfway up - depends entirely on the child and whether you've brought snacks. History types won't find much to chew on here, but the landscape itself tells a story if you know how to read it.

What makes it worthwhile is the position within the broader Brecon Beacons circuit. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping sites - Aber Glamping in the Beacons or Four Falls Glamping are both excellent - this slots in as a morning outing before tackling something more substantial. Toad & Snail Glamping, slightly closer, offers a decent base too. The peak works as a confidence builder before attempting the higher ridges, or simply as a half-day escape when the weather's decent. Free to visit, naturally. Go midweek if you can stand the drive from Neath - weekends draw a certain type of Instagram hiker these days.
