Falls Of Shin Community Project

The Falls of Shin are a proper spectacle when the water's high - a thundering cascade that drops into a dark pool about a mile north of Ardgay. What makes this spot worth the detour isn't just the falls themselves, but the chance to spot salmon leaping upstream during spawning season, usually September through November. You'll stand on the viewing platform and watch these determined fish hurl themselves at the rocks. It's genuinely mesmerising, and no two attempts look the same.

The walk from the car park takes barely ten minutes across moorland, so it's accessible for most people without requiring proper hiking boots. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, though the wind can be fierce up here - bring a jacket even if the weather looks settled. History buffs might find the hydroelectric history interesting too, though the site itself is fairly no-frills.

Entry is free and you can spend anywhere from twenty minutes to an hour depending on how patient you are watching the salmon. Best visited outside peak summer when it's less crowded and the light's softer in autumn. If you're staying at nearby Ardgay Glamping, it's genuinely convenient - practically on your doorstep. The falls work as a solid half-morning activity before heading elsewhere in the Highlands, but don't expect a full day out. Brilliant for photographers on overcast days when the water's dramatic.
