Falls of Shin

The Shin's got some punch when the water's high. Located just outside Ardgay in the Highlands, this is a proper waterfall - not one of those wimpy cascades you forget about five minutes later. The River Shin thunders down a rocky gorge, and if you time it right after heavy rain, it's genuinely impressive.

There's a viewing platform right at the edge, which means you get the spray and the roar without needing climbing gear. Most people spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're the type to sit and watch the water. It's free, naturally, and you can turn up whenever you fancy.

Walkers will appreciate this most. It's a short detour from a longer route along the river, and the gorge itself is dramatic enough to make your efforts feel worthwhile. If you've got kids, they'll find the noise and movement entertaining, though it's not the sort of place that holds attention for hours. Teenagers might actually care, which is rare.

The nearest proper base is Ardgay, just down the road, where Ardgay Glamping offers a comfortable spot if you're making a longer Highland trip. The Falls work well as a morning stop before tackling bigger walks in the area. Go when it's raining or just after - that's when you'll see what all the fuss is about. In dry spells, it's just a trickle, and honestly, not worth the drive.
