Falbae Plantation

The Forestry Commission planted these woods decades ago, and they've matured into something genuinely worth a detour if you're staying around Castle Douglas. Falbae Plantation sits on the edge of open moorland - you get proper woodland walks threading through spruce and larch, with the landscape opening up suddenly to rolling hills and distant views that punch above their weight for a forest this size.

It's ideal if you want an hour or two of straightforward walking without the rigmarole of a proper hiking expedition. The paths are clear enough, though muddy after rain like anywhere in Dumfries and Galloway. Families with young kids will manage fine on the flatter sections, though there's not much to hold attention if they're looking for a playground or visitor centre - this is forest, full stop.

The real draw is the solitude. You won't battle crowds here like you might at better-known spots. Spring and early summer are lovely when the trees are thick with growth; autumn's decent too, though the plantation isn't famous for dramatic colour changes. Winter can be bleak - worth checking conditions before you go.

If you're based at Auchenlarie Holiday Park, Falbae makes a solid half-day addition to your itinerary. It slots in well before or after Castle Douglas itself, and the walking is proper enough that you'll feel like you've actually been out. Don't expect facilities or signposting galore - bring a map or download the route beforehand.
