Fairlight Recreation Ground

The cliffs at Fairlight drop steeply to a shingle beach where you can actually spot wildlife instead of just walking past benches. It's a proper nature reserve, not a manicured park, so expect scrubland, gorse in flower if you time it right, and paths that demand decent shoes.

What you're doing here is either spotting birds - this place is serious for birdwatchers - or taking the cliff-top walk toward Hastings, which takes maybe 45 minutes each way if you don't stop. Stop though, because the views across the Channel shift depending on the light and cloud. On a clear day you can see the coast properly stretch out. On a murky one it's atmospheric in a different way.

Families with young kids might find it a bit limited - there's no playground, no café, nowhere to shelter if the weather turns. Teenagers who like actual walking rather than strolling will rate it. Serious birders absolutely should come, especially in migration season. The reserve runs along the coast between Hastings and Pett, so it's not remote but it feels less touristy than the main seafront.

Perfectly positioned if you're staying at Winchelsea Sands Holiday Park or Rye Harbour Holiday Park - both close enough that this works as a morning walk before heading inland. Admission's free, no fixed hours since it's open access, and you can spend as long as you like. Weather matters here though. High tide and wind make the walk less pleasant.
