Fairgirth Trout Fishery

There's a proper working trout fishery just outside Dalbeattie where the water sits still and dark, reflecting whatever sky Scotland decides to throw at you that day. Fairgirth is the sort of place you come to if you've actually got a rod in your hand and know what you're doing with it - this isn't a tourist attraction dressed up as fishing, it's the real thing.

You'll find serious anglers here, the kind who arrive before dawn with their tackle boxes and thermoses, casting into the water with the quiet focus of people who take their sport seriously. The lake itself is decent-sized, well-stocked with brown and rainbow trout, and the banks are accessible enough without being a scramble. It's not fancy. There are no cafes or visitor centres or interpretive boards. That's partly why it works.

If you're staying at Sandyhills Bay or Kippford Holiday Park down the coast - both just a couple of miles away - and you fish or want to try it, this is genuinely worth the drive inland. Beginners can take lessons, though you'll want to ring ahead and check current arrangements. Even if you don't fish, it's a quiet spot for a walk, though honestly the appeal here is vertical rod-based rather than horizontal wandering.

Give yourself a half-day minimum if you're going to cast a line. The Solway coast is a few minutes back toward Kippford and Southerness if you want to mix water activities. Spring and autumn are prime times - summer gets warm and the fish go deep.
