Eye bridge

The Eye Bridge is one of those local landmarks that doesn't announce itself loudly, but once you know it's there, you'll want to see it. Located near Wimborne, this striking stone structure crosses the River Stour with a single arch and carries a rather grand span considering its modest setting. The name derives from the arch's eye-like opening - simple enough, though locals have their own stories about it.

It's genuinely worth a walk if you're in the area. The approach from Wimborne takes you through pleasant enough countryside, and the bridge itself photographs well, particularly in soft morning light when the stone picks up subtle warmth. You're looking at thirty minutes there and back if you're not dawdling, less if you're on a mission.

This works brilliantly as a half-hour diversion while staying at Dorset Glamping or South Lytchett Manor - both within easy driving distance. It's not a major attraction that'll fill an afternoon, but that's partly its appeal. No crowds, no visitor centre, no £15 entry fee. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own, but walkers heading along the Stour will pass it naturally. History enthusiasts will appreciate the engineering, though don't expect plaques or interpretation boards.

Go if you're already nearby rather than making a special journey. The river path around it is pleasant enough for a morning stroll before heading to the seaside or one of the better-known Dorset spots.
