Explorers cove

The shoreline at Explorers Cove pulls you in immediately - rockpools, beach access, and the sort of coastal scenery that makes you remember why you drove to Cornwall in the first place. It's a proper nature reserve, the kind where you're actually likely to spot something worth spotting rather than just walking around a flat field wondering what you came for.

Kids do genuinely well here. The rockpools are deep enough to be interesting, shallow enough to be safe, and you'll find starfish, anemones, crabs - the lot. An hour or two is realistic before boredom sets in, longer if your lot are the type to turn over every stone. Adults tend to stick around for the walking and the light - the coastal path views are excellent, particularly if you catch it on a clear day.

It's free to access, which is the right call for a nature reserve. Spring and summer are obvious choices, though autumn can be quieter and just as good. The nearest proper town is Truro, though you're really in coastal territory here rather than deep countryside.

If you're basing yourself at Trethem Mill Touring Park just down the road, Explorers Cove works brilliantly as a half-day venture - close enough that you're not spending half your time in the car, interesting enough that it feels like a proper outing rather than just a quick walk. Combine it with one of the other coastal spots in the area for a solid day out.
