ESCALA Gallery sits just outside Colchester and punches well above its weight for a regional art space. It's contemporary art done properly - the kind of place where you'll find emerging and established artists working across painting, sculpture, installation and mixed media, rather than the usual safe rotation of local watercolourists.

The gallery itself feels intentional. Exhibitions rotate regularly, so what you see depends entirely on when you visit, but the space is used intelligently and the curation generally favours work with actual ideas behind it. You're looking at anything from a couple of hours if you're pressed for time to a full afternoon if a particular show grabs you.

This works best for adults with a genuine interest in contemporary work - it's not the sort of place to drag reluctant teenagers through, though art students and anyone doing the Essex gallery circuit will find it worth the stop. If you're based at Ardleigh Caravan & Camping Park or Colchester Country Park nearby, ESCALA makes an excellent wet-weather option or a cultural break between countryside walks. The town of Colchester itself has decent food and shopping, so you can easily build a half-day around a visit. Go midweek if you want the space to yourself.
