Erncrogo Loch

The water here is proper dark and still, surrounded by thick woodland that closes in tighter than you'd expect in the Lowlands. Erncrogo Loch sits just outside Castle Douglas, quiet enough that you might see nothing but a few ducks and the occasional heron for company.

It's a small loch - you won't spend all day here unless you're keen on fishing or just want somewhere peaceful to sit. The walk around the perimeter is manageable, nothing strenuous, and the trees provide good shelter when the wind picks up off the water. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching. There's something about Scottish lochs that makes you slow down, even tiny ones like this.

If you're camped at Galloway Glamping or Mollance Farm just down the road, this works as a morning stroll before heading elsewhere. Loch Ken, a proper bigger water, is only four miles away if Erncrogo feels too modest. It's the sort of place that won't make your highlight reel but won't disappoint if you're exploring the area properly rather than ticking boxes.

Free to visit, no facilities that I could spot, and best in the quieter months when you've got it largely to yourself. Worth twenty minutes if you're passing Castle Douglas. Not a detour on its own.
