About Eridge Rocks

The sandstone outcrops at Eridge are the real deal - proper dramatic rock formations that rise up suddenly from the Sussex Weald and look like they've got no business being in Kent at all. You get there via Sussex Wildlife Trust land, which means the walk in is half the charm, threading through woodland before the rocks announce themselves through the trees.

They're worth the detour if you're into geology or just fancy scrambling about on ancient stone. The rocks themselves aren't huge - you're not talking Stonehenge scale - but they've got character, especially if the light's right. Kids will spend a good hour clambering, checking out the different angles and textures. Adults after a proper walk should allow two hours there and back from Tunbridge Wells, which is only a few miles away.

It's free and managed by Sussex Wildlife Trust, so you're not paying entrance fees. Best visited when the ground's dry - after heavy rain the paths get boggy and lose their appeal fast. Spring and autumn are ideal: less mud than winter, less scrambling crowds than summer.

If you're based at one of the glamping spots nearby - Honnington Farm or Luna Domes are within five or six miles - this works perfectly as a half-day outing before settling back for an evening fire. Combines well with other walks in the High Weald if you've got the legs for it.
