Erewash Model Engineering Club

You'll find yourself in a working workshop filled with the sound of tiny steam engines and the smell of oil and metal - that's the Erewash Model Engineering Club in action. It's a place where grown adults take model railways and miniature locomotives dead seriously, and frankly, it's brilliant to watch.

The club displays working scale models of steam engines and trains, many of which members have built themselves over years. You can actually see these things run on track, which beats staring at static displays in a glass case. The level of detail is extraordinary - every bolt, every gauge, every tiny piece of machinery is there for a reason. If you've got any interest in engineering, railways, or just how things work, you'll lose an hour here easily. Kids tend to enjoy it too, especially if they catch a running day when the engines are in action.

It's a club first and foremost, so visiting hours can be a bit specific - best to contact them before you go rather than turning up on spec. Admission is usually modest or sometimes free depending on the day. It's based near Nottingham, which makes it a decent addition to a longer East Midlands trip, particularly if you're staying at Hill Farm Camping & Caravan Park just five and a half miles away.

Not for everyone, admittedly. If model engineering leaves you cold, you'll be out the door in twenty minutes. But if you're into the technical side of railways or just enjoy watching skilled hobbyists at work, this is genuinely worth the detour.
