Enoch Castle, Motte

A grassy mound rising abruptly from flat farmland near Thornhill - that's Enoch Castle at first glance. But climb the slope and you're standing on a proper medieval motte, the kind of earthwork that would have been crowned with a wooden fortress eight centuries ago. The views across Dumfries & Galloway's rolling terrain make the short walk worthwhile, and there's something satisfying about standing on ground that mattered in Scottish history.

It's free and accessible year-round, though there's no visitor infrastructure - just the mound itself and your imagination. You'll want ten minutes to explore properly, maybe twenty if you're the type to sit and absorb the landscape. The site works best for history buffs and walkers who appreciate archaeological remains without needing interpretation boards or tea rooms.

Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already keen on castles and medieval military engineering. The bare earthwork doesn't photograph dramatically, and there's no playground appeal. Ramblers, though, will appreciate it as a natural stopping point on a longer walk through the area.
