English Stone

The English Stone sits on Culloden battlefield near Inverness, a stark granite memorial marking where English soldiers fell during the 1746 battle. It's a simple, weathered slab - nothing fancy - but standing there you feel the weight of history. The battlefield itself sprawls across moorland that hasn't changed much in nearly 300 years, and walking between the clan cairns and this memorial gives you a real sense of the scale and tragedy of what happened.

History buffs will find this properly moving. It's not a tourist trap - there's no gift shop, no crowds - just the stone and the wind and your own thoughts. The site is free to visit and you can wander the battlefield at your own pace, though allow at least an hour to do it justice. The NTS visitor centre nearby (same site) has proper context if you want background before or after.

Families with teenagers interested in British history will get something out of it, though younger kids might find the moorland walk a bit dull without context. It's absolutely worth combining with a broader Culloden visit if you're in Inverness. Ardtower Caravan Park sits just a couple of miles away, making this an easy morning or afternoon excursion from a Highland base. Go early if you can - the light's better and the place feels less crowded.
