English Heritage - Duxford Chapel

The chapel sits in a quiet corner of Duxford, just outside Cambridge, looking rather like it's been quietly minding its own business for the better part of a millennium. What you're actually looking at is a proper medieval church - small, unpretentious, the sort of place where you can practically feel the weight of centuries in the stonework.

Inside, there's genuine Saxon and Norman architecture if you know what you're looking for, though frankly the real appeal is the sense of time standing still. No gift shop, no crowds, no velvet ropes. Just you, the old stone, and whatever congregation decisions were made in this space eight hundred years ago. It's the kind of visit that rewards a slow wander rather than a rushed tick-box.

If you're camping at Pightle Farm or Shepreth Mill - both solid options within five miles - this makes a decent half-hour detour on a quieter morning. Not the sort of thing that'll occupy a family for hours, but genuinely worthwhile if you're interested in how ordinary medieval people actually worshipped. The nearby Duxford Imperial War Museum is the bigger draw for most visitors, so you could reasonably combine the two.

Best approached on foot if the weather's cooperating. There's a real sense of landscape history here that you'll miss driving straight past. Worth the short trip from Cambridge if you've got transport sorted.
