Engine Wood

The moment you step into Engine Wood, you'll understand why locals keep quiet about it. This proper woodland sits just outside Guildford, dense enough to feel genuinely remote despite being minutes from the town. Tall oaks and beech trees create that cathedral-like atmosphere woodlands do best - the kind where light filters through in columns and you can actually hear yourself think.

It's a straightforward walk through, nothing fancy. No playground, no visitor centre, no tea room. Just trees, paths that wind without too much faffing about, and the sort of peace you don't find many places anymore. Kids who like exploring will be entertained easily enough - there's enough undergrowth and fallen logs to keep them occupied for an hour or so. For actual walkers though, it's more of a quick detour than a destination.

The woodland works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Surrey Hills Yurts is only 4 miles away, and Embers Camping near Polesden Lacey is equally close. A morning ramble through Engine Wood before heading to grander attractions in the Surrey Hills makes proper sense. Access appears free and there aren't advertised opening hours, which suggests the sort of informal woodland most English councils let people use as they see fit.

Go early if you can. Midweek especially. The whole point of Engine Wood is that it's uncrowded.
