Emsworthy Rocks

The granite tors rising from Dartmoor near Newton Abbot aren't dramatic in the Alpine sense, but they've got character. Emsworthy Rocks reward a proper walk across open moorland - you're looking at rocky outcrops that break through the heather and bilberry in ways that feel properly wild for Devon.

It's the kind of place that appeals to moorland walkers rather than casual visitors. You won't find tearoom facilities or marked trails in the conventional sense; this is Dartmoor proper. The rocks themselves offer decent scrambling if you're into that, and the views back across the moor are worth the effort. Allow two hours minimum from the car park, longer if you want to explore the wider area.

Families with older kids who enjoy rambling will find it satisfying. Younger children might lose patience before reaching the rocks themselves. The ground underfoot changes from path to rougher terrain, and it's genuinely exposed in bad weather.

There's no admission charge - Dartmoor access is free - though you'll need to sort parking locally. Timing matters here. Spring and early summer are good when the moorland isn't waterlogged.
